As the debate draws to a close, the members of the CGA Model UN team had the opportunity to reflect on the conference. Although CGA MUN didn't receive any awards from the conference, every member of the team worked hard, brought up valid points in debate, and socialized with hundreds of other college students.
All of the members of the Coast Guard Academy Model UN team agreed that their experience at UPMUNC will benefit them in their future studies, and the team looks forward to competing at McGill University in January.

UPMUNC- Day 1
After opening ceremonies the CGA Model UN team jumped straight into heated debate.
On the Disarmament and International Security committee, Zach and Brennan began by discussing the issue of Small Arms in Africa. In typical Coast Guard fashion, they brought up the need for Maritime Domain Awareness and moving toward greater port security in African countries.
The Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian committee, Dan reports, is busy debating long-term solutions to end female genital mutilation. Currently, the committee is seeking out ways to ensure that FGM is carried out safely, until the practice can be permanently ended.
Greg is really starting to make waves as the Kingdom of Thailand in the "Origins of World War Two" committee. He worked to broker peace talks between the Japanese and Chinese, and has been in communication with the United States, the UK, and the USSR to continue the peace process.
In the ad hoc committee on North Korea, James (Jake) Bertram is busy trying to keep outside influence from interfering in East Asia. After being invited to speak with the North Korean Cabinet, Indonesia continued to seek non-interventionist policies and a peaceful solution to this issue. However, with the United States and China facing off in the Sea of Japan, conflict seems all but inevitable.
Bo and Max are in the process of finding votes for their amendment to the World Health Organization's draft resolution. Their amendment deals with providing regional oversight as to how medical drugs are being administered and distributed.
Finally, on the Special Political and Decolonization committee, Justin is discussing the ramification of private companies controlling the water supply. Thailand worked with several other Southeast Asian nations to find NGOs to provide funding and technical support for their initiatives.
Outside of committee, several Coast Guard Model UN team members were spotted going to dinner and other social events with delegates from other schools. Although the CGA Model UN team is a force to be reckoned around the conference table, the team is equally skilled at networking and the social aspects of Model UN conferences have not been forgotten.

University of Pennsylvania Model UN Conference
The CGA Model UN team just got out of opening ceremonies, and is excited to finally begin debate. The keynote speaker for opening ceremonies was the founder of charity: water, and spoke about the global water crisis. The team found his remarks very interesting, and would like to encourage everyone to check out their website for more information.
The first committee session begins in about 20 minutes, so wish us luck as we begin this first round of debate!
